Sore Muscles ? ..Take an Ice Bath !

Why Do Ice Baths Work?
Every time you train strenuously, regardless if you are lifting weights, playing tennis, or running, you cause tiny, microscopic tears to your muscles. When these tears occurs to soft tissue, capillaries and blood vessels tear, muscle and soft tissue cells may rupture. This triggers the body's response to injury, the inflammatory response.

Applying an ice pack to an injury causes the tissue and blood vessels to constrict. (Similar to how your skin constricts forming goose bumps, when exposed to cold) The constricted blood vessels allow less blood and plasma to the injured area. This limits the amount of fluid collecting at the injury site.

Limiting the amount of fluid reduces general swelling to the area. In short: Ice reduces swelling when placed directly on an injured area for a short period. The reduction in swelling, along with the numbing effect of ice eases the discomfort.

The tiny tears will repair and are what ultimately will make you stronger. It is how you build muscle, get stronger, and run further. However, your body reacts to the tiny, multiple soft tissue injuries in the same manner as it would if you had sustained one larger injury- with swelling and pain and stiffness, usually occurring a day or so after. This is known as Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness (DOMS)

Using an ice bath after strenuous exercise works in the same manner as applying an ice pack to an injured area. Usually used for the lower body, the athlete sits in a tub of ice water. This allows the ice water to surround the entire muscle groups of the legs and lower trunk.

It is not a coincidence that most professional and college sports teams, trainers, sports medicine specialists and physical therapist use ice bath therapy as a treatment modality for injured athletes. Trainers and coaches considered it a vital step in the recovery process and one method in the prevention of injuries. It is utilized, because it works.

Ice baths help professional athletes maintain their grueling training regiments. It helps them get back to the gym sooner, reduces the odds they will sustain an injury, and keeps them healthy for more games and practices. When training hard counts – maximize the amount of training your body can handle by using an efficient recovering program that includes regular ice baths.

Spa For Men!

As we’ve stressed before, the spa lifestyle is for everyone– man or woman, two months to 102 years, and everyone in between. For his first time, Jonathan Valdez, award-nominated blogger of OrangeJuiceandBiscuits took his post-summer skincare woes to facial guru Nadia at Tribeca Beauty Spa.

I was actually really nervous about my facial appointment. Some people say that it can be painful depending on what they do to you and that the peels could be a pain. The day came for my appointment and when I walked into the Tribeca Beauty Spa I was greeted by a friendly staff. They offered water and/or a glass of wine while I waited for Nadia to call for me. Finally the moment came and I walked into a dim room and was told to lay on the table and to wait for a tiny bit. From the moment I got comfortable I felt instantly more relaxed. There was peaceful music playing and soothing sounds filled the room. Then it was time to get started.

As I said before, I had been having trouble with my skin and some things just had to be opened up. Nadia used a lancette to open up some of the stuff that had made my face feel tight and uncomfortable. I was concerned that it would be painful but Nadia takes extra caution to make sure that it is as bearable as it can be. After the hard part was over, Nadia informed me that she would be using a mushroom peel on me because it is for very sensitive skin. It felt almost minty and soothed my irritated skin. To my surprise the peel did not burn and I felt it sooth my face.

As I waited for the peel to dry I got to lay there and listen to the music and almost fell asleep due to the comfortable table and relaxing sounds and music. Everyone really needs that chance to just escape for 10 to 15 minutes while your peel is drying. There is nothing like it. When it was all said and done Nadia recommended some home care products that would compliment and help the work that she had done. I took home a line of Sonya Dakar products that feel refreshing every time you use them.
The moral of the story is that no one should fear the spa or treating your skin to fresh fun. Guys need to take care of their skin too!

Do you know who Wrote this Quote :
"The question for each man to settle is not what he would do if he had means, time, influence and educational advantages; the question is what he will do with the things he has. The moment a young man ceases to dream or to bemoan his lack of opportunities and resolutely looks his conditions in the face, and resolves to change them, he lays the corner-stone of a solid and honorable success."

If you have built castles in the air, your work need not be lost; that is where they should be.

Now put foundations under them.

To find what you seek in the road of life,

the best proverb of all is that which says:

"Leave no stone unturned."

Life has no smooth road for any of us; and in the bracing atmosphere of a high aim the very roughness stimulates the climber to steadier steps, till the legend, over steep ways to the stars, fulfills itself.

W. C. Doane

Happy are those who dream dreams and are ready to pay the price to make them come true.

Far away in the sunshine are my highest aspirations. I may not reach them, but I can look up and see their beauty, believe in them, and try to follow where they lead

Massage Aids in Exercise Recovery

A recent study found massage may aid in recovery, particularly among women, from the temporary state of immuno suppression often induced by exercise.
“Massage after exercise—responses of immunologic and endocrine makers: A randomized single-blind placebo-controlled study” involved 60 healthy, active subjects, all of whom were university students. Twenty-three of the subjects were women, while 37 were men.

Each participant underwent two exercise sessions at least two weeks apart and at the same time of day. The first session served to familiarize subjects with the exercise protocol. After the second session of exercise, subjects were randomly assigned to receive either 40 minutes of massage therapy or 40 minutes of sham electrotherapy.
The recovery massage protocol involved 40 minutes of myofascial massage,The massage therapist focused on the legs (gastronemious and biceps femoris), lower back, neck, face, skull and anterior thigh. Long strokes, J strokes, cross-hand technique, sustained pressure on occipital condyles and ear pulls were performed during these sessions.
“The main finding of this study was that, among the women, massage produced a greater recovery of the sIgA rate after intense exercise compared with sham treatment,” state the study’s authors. “The influence of gender on response to massage will be the subject of future study by our group.”

Shiatsu Helps Induce Labor in Post-Term Pregnancy

A study in England on 66 post-term women (those who attended a hospital clinic after 40 weeks gestation) showed that women who employed shiatsu techniques were significantly more likely to have spontaneous labor than the non-shiatsu group who more frequently required induced labor.

"The Effects of Shiatsu on Post-Term Pregnancy" evaluated the effects of shiatsu techniques, as taught by hospital midwives, on the progress of post-term labors and deliveries. The study was conducted by staff at St. Michael's Hospital, Bristol, England, from March to July 2000.

The subjects attended a hospital consultant clinic appointment at 40 weeks gestation and were taught the massage techniques by a midwife who had completed a six-day shiatsu course. The control group consisted of 76 women who attended similar clinics but were not taught the shiatsu techniques.
